So I'm a big fat liar [Nov. 17th, 2007|11:20 am]
And bad at even once a week.

But hey it will at least average out to once a week. I don't aim high.

Ok foods, from last weekend and on:

I cooked some more recipes from Veganomicon. I need new baking powder, its true that its 100% dead. I made pound cake, and it was like fudge, and my almond quinoa muffins didn't get a rise much either. My baking powder gives vegan baking a bad name. At least I suspect thats what happened.

I also made BBQ seitan + Mac Daddy (from Veganomicon) and some of that coleslaw, for a mid summer meal.
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I liked the mac daddy, but not as much as other cheeze sauces, I must say. I did do tricks with the leftovers I enjoyed though, like adding peas and seaweed for a fauxtuna noodle casserole of sorts, and even better, mixed sriracha and capers.

I also made my own invention of peanut buttery sweet potato black eyed peas west african inspired dish. I had intended on making OneChubbyVegan's tester recipe for a potato and peanutbutter black bean thing, but I bought sweet potatoes thinking thats what it was. I was wrong, it turns out once I got to look at the recipe. So I had to make my own thing. It was good, but actually (is this possible?) too peanut buttery. Maybe 3 TBS was a bit too much. Tasted good but was a bit sticky. Id upload it for you to see, but my camera isn't staying open long enough for me to get the picture off, which is kind of worrying me really. I also made some yummy candy cane hot chocolate latte/cappuccino like drinks multiple times. SO GOOD.

Finally, I made a new favorite from Vegan Planet, sweet potato and blackbean enchiladas. I wanted to make something new, but couldn't spare the time to figure out what that would be. Finally, maybe on Sunday I will make the original plan for blackbeans, One Chubby Vegan's tester recipe. I did make Mexican Millet from V-Con though, and that was good, though I like my Mexican rice less tomatoey so I'd think it would be tastier for me with like one less TBS of tomato paste. But it was also undercooked, even though I kept adding more and more water, I eventually just decided to eat it crunchy. It doesn't seem the amount of water added at the beginning was quite enough, Oh well.

I'll actually write about food and not just talk about what I've cooked next week because it will be thanksgiving break and I may just have some time to figure it out!

Also, does anyone else out there like Malta Goya or am I the only one (besides Meli who gave my my first one back in HS some time)?

Food times [Nov. 4th, 2007|05:47 pm]
So, I apparently don't follow recipes as well as I should. I left out the bread crumbs in the chickpea cutlets I made so I didn't bother with a pic today, cuz they didn't look right. My batts were dead on my camera yesterday anyway. The beans were good though, and better the second day.

I today also made Seitan O' Greatness, plus a "salami" flavored vers of said seitan. I also made a white bean pate that is waterier then I like my bean spreads (Bryanna's white bean pate), so I may mix half of it back into the blender and more white beans, so I can thicken it up. I even used almost half of the water listed for blending. The onions added a LOT of water obviously. Either way, it will run off bread and I don't like that about a bean spread.

Also made today sweet and sour coleslaw. I always buy pre shredded coleslaw stuff whenever its lowered in price for quick sale because I love coleslaw, but hate cutting up cabbage (though I do sometimes).
The dressing was good:
1 TBS oil
3-4 TBS vinegar
1 tsp relish
1 tsp mustard (I used horseradish mustard)
3 tsp sugar
1 tsp horseradish
1 tsp salt
some pepper

I used this much on about 4 fluffy cups of coleslaw, though it was maybe a little too little dressing. Coulda used more sugar for the sweet too.

No sit down dinner today, just picked at the stuff I made, so I didn't really take any pictures, maybe I'll take a shot at the cooled seitan.

bah boring indeed. Can't wait for the seitan to cool!

Whoa! BUZZED! [Nov. 3rd, 2007|01:00 pm]
Nothing terribly interesting to enter yet for food today. Just had some toast with smart balance light.

And a homemade capuccino, I used 1c soymilk, 1 serving of espresso homemade on the stove with a cute little stovetop maker I finally got to use (Abby made me some stovetop espresso and I was intrigued and found a 1 serving sized espresso maker for $7 at Marshalls so...I bought it), plus 1 tsp of hot cocoa mix. I didn't heat the soymilk up quite enough, and it needed a bit more sugar, but it was tasty; after a whizz in the blender to give it a little foamyness, it was very capuccino like.

However, its my first caffeine dose since the cleanse and I feel shaky horrible. UGH! Serioulsy wondering if one can make decaf espresso with dark roast decaf. Sacreligious, yes, but possible I suspect. I think I can give up caffeine pretty well now. The cleanse may be questionable for its detox effects, but its *perfect* for someone ditching caffeine. After 2 days, caffeine headaches were gone and I felt very alert in the morning, more then when I was off the cleanse and drinking grapefruit juice. I'm gonna drink some detox tea to see if that helps me a bit.

Otherwise, today I'm intending on eating Loubie, which was my #1 craving while on the cleanse. For some reason, a dinner I ordered *once* at Aladdins in Cleveland was tempting me throughout the cleanse. Its just tomatoes, onions and green beans with oil and spices. I think they used those wide flat green beans (not really flat like snow peas though), and chickpea cutlets. These are the favoritest of the new recipes from Veganomicon and I very must try it NOW! Unfortunately I wont have a picture because my camera batteries are recharging. I'll take photos of leftovers tomorrow. I'll also have some leftover Gomiaso popcorn I made last night.

One of these days I'll write on one of the food topics, but for now I want to go grocery shopping so I can make this stuff!

I totally forgot to tell you what the month is called! VegMoFo! [Nov. 2nd, 2007|07:35 pm]
Or VeganMoFo. Whatever you want. Its a little freeform.

Anyway, today's dinner was simple, because its the last day of specified eating for the cleanse. He just said to eat veggies. So I sauteed up some kale with a leetle bit of garlic flavored oil, added 2 more cloves of garlic, some soysauce (a little too much even though it seemed like so little, probably like 3-4 shakes, overpowered the other flavors a bit), some powdered ginger, because my fresh stuff is squooshy and should be composted, some hot pepper flakes, tsp of sugar, splash of sherry, rice vinegar and sesame oil. Then with Isa's suggestion from Veganomicon, I put some gomiaso on. I can't believe I've never made this toasted sesame and seaweed concoction before! I now want to make popcorn with a little garlic and chili oil for popping, and sprinkle this stuff on and I think it would be awesome.

So, new recipe count:
Gomaiso (combination of 2 recipes, one from How It All Vegan, and one from somewhere online)
Sweet and Salty Sesame Kale (my simple invation)

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

And the badly focused food pic. One good thing about this is that I may finally take some pride in presenation, because I've never bothered with presentation unless other people were eating over. Also, my camera really sucks. Its a digital camera from the 90's. Sorry! Not gonna be pretty food porn. Don't even know if it has macro setting.

Sooo, I may be posting with a bit more frequency! [Nov. 1st, 2007|09:44 pm]
A vegan bulletin board I frequent, The Post Punk Kitchen is having its own version of NaNoWriMo, for those of the less verbal and more uh...hungry. Anyway, they've given us freedom in what we exactly want to do. So, I'm hoping on updating once or twice a week, posting some food porn (if I can find my crappy digital cam) and writing about the process or something. I'm aiming for making at least 20 new things this month, whether by my own design or new recipes (I have some cookbooks so I'll be using those)

For the beginning, I have no picture for today's dinner, but its soup which is never all that pretty anyway. But its soup, and that is very exciting for me because I've pretty much not eaten since the 20th of October. I've been doing the Master Cleanse, which I tried in January but gave up after like 2 or 3 days. I drank spicy lemonade for 10 days, and a day and a half of grapefruit juice, finally eating some soup today. I'm not sure I'm excited about the spice mix I made (Middle Eastern Mix, Ibzar), in a soup. I could see it being good on seitan, or beans or something, but not in a soupysoup. Its not bad, but I think the cinnamon in it is throwing me off. Its also a random assemblage of veggies but thats just because I was shopping whilst being a little hungry and a little more hungry for variety.

For eating, finally I was allowed to eat. I was supposed to only eat a few bits of vegs and a lot more broth, plus a few little rye crisps. I had some rye pretzels, soup, probably too many vegs, but I don't feel sick, plus a little rye bread, and (oops) some chips. Oh and a little soy yogurt, to help the digestion along. FOOD is exciting!

Finally, after my digestion has hit levels safe for eating whatever I want, I can have some fun!

For the first three people that reply to me and re-post this challenge, I will send you something. It might be something I've made, or something cool from my hidden stash, it might be a mix CD, or a rubber duck, a book I think you will enjoy, or something else that is completely awesome. Whatever it is, I promise that I will get it to you in 365 days or fewer. The only thing you need to do in order to participate is to be one of the first three to reply to this, AND post this thing on your journal.

holy crap, shoot me, gougue out my eyes, whatever [Sep. 21st, 2007|02:54 pm]
I've been dealing with setting up geico for like an hour and a half and i wanted to be on the road to Columbia like an hour ago.

I'm getting SO antsy sitting on the computer chatting with someone. I was so close to done and out of here when my premiums went WAY up, like after i entered in my credit card, which seems shady. UGH, one little bump in the parking lot but they do points per damage and apparently her old honda civic from the mid 90 got $1900 worth of damage which seems rediculous. Apparently when filling out for the quote i just assumed the damage wasnt that high but in NC, over $1500 in damage and you get 2 points on your insurance. Those 2 points cost me almost $500 in insurance increases for over the year and will keep it up for 3 years! WHAT? So, in other words, the extra $400 the accident cost will give the insurance companies more then they paid over that for the accident itself. Well at least my car will be paid off in less then a year.

Course, my car will be paid off by my student loans which is just transfering the debt, with higher intrest rates at that!

But now, to the bank and then to Columbia! YAY pride parades and marching!

Does anyone know this about car insurance? [Sep. 17th, 2007|10:00 am]
Does Geico suck or anything?

Because they reallyreally ARE cheaper. Like nearly $200 cheaper for 6 months.

Thats with similar coverage then my current coverge with State Farm.

WTF really?

After long wait [Sep. 14th, 2007|09:08 am]
[mood | sleepy]

So after months of "dammit Sprint why don't you have service anywhere" I find out that I have free roaming!

So they say anyway.

It turns out afterall, that I can call and recieve messages from home! YAY!

This is very exciting. We will know for sure when I recieve my next bill.

In other news, school is going ok. I'm not sure I'm keeping quite up enough with my reading and I feel prety stupid reading about statistics, but the stats work so far isn't too bad, just the book. The book makes me feel really dumb. So does reading all the stats crap in journal articles. So I gotta get this stuff down, but it sucks. I'm starting to talk to people about theses though. It seems like, if I'm studying invasives I will be studying Oriental Bittersweet, though I'm unsure. Also funding is also still unknown so I might be doing all this outta my pocket. If I do treatment as part of the experiment, then I might be able to get a chem company to send me some supplies if I feel like selling my soul. And maybe I will :p USDA does have some grants but getting some outside of agricultural realms is a bit harder. I think this is actually where they are suggesting I work: http://www.srs.fs.usda.gov/news/63

In funfun times, I've gone backpacking with a school led group and will be going whitewater rafting this Sunday (you're going bowling aidan but I'll throw myself down some rapids for ya!)! I'm excited about going rafting, I've never done it. I almost considered spending a schload of money to go skydiving on my birthday, but the group filled up yesterday shortly before I asked about it. That would have been a...thrilling way to ring in 29, no? Maybe I should ask if I can be on a "if someone cancels list." Fer crying out loud its skydiving, someone will cancel out of fear, yeah? Either way, I will get a discount (still expensive) as a student and member of the outings club group thing, so I can go next time they offer it. I will also get to go on a free skiiing trip, and I've never done THAT before either. Plus I think I'm gonna go on a caving trip too. I think that all of THESE things are where my excess money is gonna get lost in. Its a good thing I got way more student loans then I need!

Also, isn't everything Aiden's fault? Ok, maybe not.

But they were a year ago :p
